The OV-4 Organisation Relationships View - see http://www.modaf.org.uk/cOV/160/ov-4-organisational-relationships-chart-v12 allows organisational structures to be depicted and also interactions between them.

Useful as it is to be able to form such views it does, however, raise some questions.

Does it belong, as defined, as an operational view? From the MODAF metamodel (M3) Organisation Type/Actual Organisation, Post Type/Actual Post and Role Type/Role are all types of Resource Type. The operational views are, I thought, all about defining the logical world or problem not embedding any notion of implementation. Elsewhere the nearest stereotype you see representing any notion of organisation in any OV is a Node - a logical thing. Resource Types are all about reality and how, in this case, organisations are constructed. If you look at where these stereotypes sit in the M3 they all sit within the Systems package. For some reason the OV-4 is constructed from objects that are from the Systems views world. This is particularly so when dealing with the Actual OV-4. If a logical view is needed shouldn’t this really be an OV-2 Operational Node Relationships View instead?

Is it a unique view not covered elsewhere? It looks as though the OV-04 is made of Resource Types and is a structural view. A structure consisting of Resource Types or interactions between them would normally be depicted on a SV-1 Resource Interaction Specification View. See http://www.modaf.org.uk/dSV/127/sv-1-resource-interaction-specification-12

This is a legacy inherited from DODAF (page 98 of DODAF Version 1.5, Volume II Product Descriptions - see http://www.defenselink.mil/cio-nii/docs/DoDAF_Volume_II.pdf ). This shows a UML OV-4 where <<node>> has part <<role>> so it gets worse.

I’m left wondering whether it would be possible now to manage with one less view. What is the smallest set of views actually needed?

Any thoughts?
